When things just work ...
I downloaded Firefox 1.5 Beta 2 some time ago and obviously, almost all of the extensions I use did not work with this new version. The most notable extension I missed so far was the Tab X extension. It “adds a small close button to each of the browser tabs, and removes the close button from the end of the tab bar.” – if you’re used to Safari’s way to handle Tabs, this extension is a huge time-saver.
Anyway, I checked almost daily if there was a new version available that would work with Firefox 1.5 Beta 2 – but to no avail. When I started Firefox for the second time today, it suddenly appeared to me that the close button was back at it’s favourite place: On each tab.
Appearently, Firefox 1.5’s new extension updater had silently updated the extension sometimes during the first launch and installed it on the second – a good example of things that just work. I’m delighted.
BTW: At the time being, two hirds of the 30 extension I had installed in Firefox 1.0.x work under Firefox Beta 1.5 – quite a bit if you consider it’s only the second Beta more or less publicly announced!
